Statistics now tell us that an average of 171,000 Christians worldwide are martyred for their faith every year. (Source: Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary).

Now think about that for a minute. Over 170 thousand Christian martyrs each and every year that goes by! How Heaven will one day be populated by such a glorious throng. But it is also a deeply shocking statistic.

Just this week we got another report from Pakistan of two
Christians falsely accused and martyred for their faith. The Asia
Evangelical Alliance reported that:

“Suspected Islamic extremists on July 19 outside a courthouse
shot dead two Christians accused of “blaspheming” prophet
Muhammad. The armed gunmen shot the Rev. Rashid Emmanuel,
32, and his 30-year-old brother Sajid Emmanuel, days after
handwriting experts on Wednesday (July 14) notified police that
signatures on papers denigrating Muhammad did not match those
of the accused. Expected to be exonerated soon, the two leaders
of United Ministries Pakistan were being led in handcuffs back to
jail under police custody when they were shot at 2:17 p.m.,
Christians present said.
Rizwan Paul, president of advocacy group Life for All, said five
armed, masked men opened fire on the two Christians amid crowds
outside Faisalabad District and Sessions Court.”

When we hear about such atrocities, it is good to remember too
the other 171,000 such deaths that occur around the world every
year. The Persecuted church is truly on the heart of God.
